Advances in prenatal care now allow all expecting parents to access a simple blood test that screens for certain fetal chromosomal conditions, including Trisomy 13, Trisomy 18, and Trisomy 21 (commonly known as Down syndrome). This test, called noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) or cell-free fetal DNA testing, is safe, accurate, and available as early as 10 weeks of pregnancy.
How the Test Works
During pregnancy, small amounts of your baby’s DNA circulate in your blood. NIPT analyzes this DNA to screen for chromosomal conditions. These tests detect more than 98% of cases for Trisomy 13, 18, and 21, with a very low chance of a false positive. It’s important to note that while NIPT is highly accurate, a negative result does not completely guarantee an unaffected pregnancy.
The test can also identify your baby’s sex as early as 12 weeks, if you choose to know.
Who Can Have NIPT?
NIPT is available to all expecting parents, not just those considered high-risk. It may be especially helpful if you:
Are 35 or older at the time of delivery
Have a personal or family history of chromosomal conditions
Had an abnormal ultrasound or other prenatal screening results
If the Test Shows a Possible Issue
If NIPT indicates a potential chromosomal condition, your doctor may recommend follow-up diagnostic testing, such as:
Chorionic villus sampling (CVS)
Amniocentesis
A genetic consultation can also help you understand the results and make a personalized plan for your pregnancy.

12-week ultrasound to check for nuchal thickness, which can indicate chromosomal concerns
