Evaluation of Infertility

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after having unprotected intercourse for twelve months. If you and your partner fit this definition, several tests that can be performed to help pinpoint the cause of your inability to conceive. Initial evaluation begins with the workup cycle. The cycle begins when a woman gets her period. The first day of the menstrual period is designated as Day 1. A variety of lab tests are drawn on Day 3 of the cycle. These tests will check hormone levels and evaluate for prior exposure to infectious diseases. Around mid-cycle, when a woman usually ovulates, an ultrasound is performed to evaluate for ovulation. In addition, a post-coital test is performed to evaluate how a woman’s cervical mucous and her partner’s sperm interact. On Day 21, more blood tests are done, again, to evaluate for ovulation.

Our office utilizes 3D and 4D ultrasound to assess the uterine cavity and patency of the fallopian tubes. Ultrasound can also be used throughout he course of your cycle to assess the efficacy of current treatment.

Women’s Health Specialists offers several infertility treatments. We are able to perform intrauterine insemination, where the sperm are placed directly into the uterus to aid in conception. We also prescribe common ovulation-inducing drugs like Clomid and menopausal gonadotropins (a.k.a. fertility shots). When a woman is on these medications, she will be monitored with ultrasound to evaluate the quality and quantity of the eggs produced. If in vitro fertilization (IVF) is required, we will refer the patient to a qualified reproductive endocrinologist for further management.
