Essure is a permanent birth control procedure that works together with your body to create a natural barrier that prevents pregnancy. This is not the right procedure for people who want to have more children. This is a simple procedure which can be performed right here in our office. There is little or no down time. There are no surgical incisions. Essure does not use any hormones.
The procedure is able to be performed very quickly, in about 15 to 30 minutes. A small device is inserted into the patient’s uterus. Under direct visualization a small soft coil is placed in the tubal ostia (the entryway to the patient’s Fallopian Tube.) The Essure coils are made of the same material that is used in heart stents. After the coils are placed within the Fallopian tubes, the body forms scar tissue which makes a natural barrier in the Fallopian tube. The sperm and egg never meet and pregnancy does not occur. Essure has a very low failure rate when compared with other birth control options. The patient is given light sedation anesthesia during the procedure and recovery time is very fast.
Most women go home within 45 minutes of the procedure. The patient is allowed to resume normal activities the next day. It is very important to schedule an ultrasound to confirm tubal blockage three months following your procedure. This is performed in the office under your doctor’s supervision.
